“I hope you’ll be comfortable.”
Fae looked back to Luca who stood in the doorway of the room, an extra coverlet folded in her arms. The young Betheanian brought it over, laying it on the edge of the bed attentively.
“It may be hot in the day, but the house gets cold at night,” she explained and Fae thanked her, touching the soft fabric. It was warm under her fingers, no doubt recently ironed. “Also, I hope you don’t mind sharing the room. We have a guest chamber downstairs, but…” Luca drew off uneasily, and Fae rose, moving to the window. The garden outside was spilt with silver moonlight, making the orchids look silver.
“I am very comfortable, thank you. This evening has been a pleasure,” she said earnestly, aware that her demeanour might appear cold. She forced herself to relieve her guard a little, turning back to Luca who had dropped onto her own bed and was sat, a pillow clutched in her arms. “The meal was truly delicious.”
“Oh, that was nothing. Tomorrow we’ll have time to prepare something much more spectacular. Do you like venison?” Luca’s smile was contagious, and yet Fae could not allow herself to share its warmth.
“I do, but I fear tomorrow I may have to move on,” she admitted. “My duty in the Myrithian Forest is complete, and I ought to return home.”
Luca appeared crestfallen. “I am sorry to hear that,” she said sincerely. “Is there no way I can convince you to delay your return a while? It’s been so long since we’ve had company in the house, and I have never had the chance to talk with a Sidhe before. That is to say…you are welcome to rest here longer. It would be our pleasure, truly.”
Fae considered the invitation. She had thought to leave for the Betheanian capital in the morning to see that the princess had been safely delivered, and yet somehow after the glorious meal they had just shared, made colourful with laughter and stories, Fae felt somewhat reluctant to leave so quickly. Her place was not amongst humans, but the entire affair in the forest had been so surreal in nature that it hardly seemed right to return now. Perhaps it would do no harm to rest a while longer, to heal and recuperate. For a few days at least, she had earned her time to do so.
“How long have you lived in Sarrin town?” Fae returned to her own bed and sat on it, facing Luca who was brushing through her long, dark hair. It was truly a beautiful mane, elegant and vibrant, like strands of dyed silk. Fae knew several Sidhe who would be jealous of such hair.
“Oh, I was born in Sarrin.” Luca’s brush caught in a knot, and she tore it forcefully through. “Lived here all my life. I thought I might like to go to Harmatia at some time, but the older I get the more that country loses its appeal. You know,” she leant in conspiratorially, “they marry as young as fifteen there sometimes.
